Magical Moon Farm

Home of the Velveteen Rabbit

For those who understand where enchantment originates and for those who need no explanation about the magic that makes us real, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that the woman who displays this site was once a little girl who hung upside down in trees and ran through the woods talking to wood sprites, fairies, wild ruffled grouse, rabbits, lizards, snakes and frogs. Perhaps it was from her upside down perspective that she realized the world truly was capsized in its thinking. For why else would one go through life not protecting the very nature of what sustains us? Monique Miller-McCarthy, grew up in a very unique and creative atmosphere near Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Her mother, Donna Green, a well known artist and author of children’s books, raised Monique to not only value nature, but to also nurture the presence of magic in whatever she set out to accomplish. When Monique was just four years old, she became the model for the Nursery Magic Fairy in the book, The Velveteen Rabbit, illustrated by her mother. Her sensitive nature with animals, especially rabbits at that age and her soft, innocent features made her the perfect candidate for the role.

When Monique was eleven years old, her mother moved her children to a farm situated on a hill across the street from the ocean and named it, Magical Moon Farm. The real, Velveteen Rabbit, a mini rex, used in the book alongside Monique as the fairy, moved to the farm with them.

Today the five acre, organic farm and home of the Velveteen Rabbit, has hundreds of visitors yearly. It’s sweet old fashioned gardens, outside fairy nooks, farm stand, Hobbit house, art gallery and magical features are indicative of the illustrations in the book. An old fashioned looking Rabbit hutch is visited frequently by children of all ages.

On Saturdays cars line up in the fields on the farm and people lay out chairs and blankets in front of the century old barn to hear live music from all over the country. They do this in honor of the children of the Magical Moon Farm & Foundation who are on a journey with cancer and other life threatening conditions. Monique’s mission, to help make the world safer for children growing up in a less toxic world is evident all over the farm.

So if you’re in the neighborhood and would like to be reminded that love is what makes us real, please consider visiting both the REAL Velveteen Rabbit and the grown up Nursery Magic Fairy at Magical Moon Farm, Educational Survival Sanctuary !
